June 2023

Here Today; Gone Tomorrow!

It is hard to fathom how rapidly time keeps moving. In a blink of an eye, tomorrow is today and yesterday was a year ago. It seems like 2023 just began only a couple of months ago. Valentine’s Day seemed like it was a few weeks ago. Easter and the Lenten season just wrapped up; and now, summer is upon us. Indeed, time keeps on slipping into the past.

Despite the speed of time, summer is one of our most favorite times of the year. The weather is warmer. School is out for students. Vacations are taken and the grill is used for cookout throughout the week. The kids get to stay up a little later and sleep in a little longer. Some people go to the lake while others go to the shores. Still others head to the mountains to enjoy the weather and sunshine. On top of this, I’m sure that there is a lot of swimming going on no matter where you are or where you go; after all, it tis the season.

Yes, summer is a great time of the year, but like with all things with time, it will soon be history again. Before you know it, schools will be ready to reopen, the weather will begin to be cooler, the trees will start to change colors and the fresh grown vegetables will be hauled from warmer places. It is all the more reason to enjoy the aspects of summer while you can.

For this reason, I am of the belief that we are called to live in the ‘here and now’ of the season. The scriptures support the notion that we should take advantage of today and do not procrastinate until later what you can do now, especially as it pertains to serving the Lord. Ephesians 5:15-16 teaches,

15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

In like manner, we should never assume that we have plenty of time to do the things that we are compelled to do. Proverbs 27:1 says,

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring”.

We do not know what tomorrow will bring. Maybe we will be less equipped tomorrow than what we are today. Maybe, we will not feel as well tomorrow as we do today. Perhaps time will become a factor in the future when we just can’t seem to bring our schedules together to make time for important occasions. Who even knows who will be here tomorrow and in the coming days?

Whatever the scenarios may be pertaining to the future, we may want to give credence to the notion that God may be setting things up in a fashion to allow the best opportunity we have for today. In Ecclesiastes 3:1, it says,

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

God’s hand is in every aspect of our lives, so it becomes important to respond to his timings that may provide what’s best for us, right now. It is He that knows the best time for all things in our lives. So before the season is gone and the time has slipped away, seek the Lord and his wisdom so to take advantage of the time and opportunities he affords to every one of us.
